Fool's Puzzle is the first outing which introduces the character of Benni Harper, new curator of the Folk Arts Museum and Artists Co-Op. The series continues as the ranch-bred widow of Jack Harper, and San Celica, California Police Chief, Gabe Ortiz, continually find themselves in the thick of things. The use of quilt patterns as clues is a creative way to challenge the reader. Titles include: Irish Chain; Kansas Troubles; Fool's Puzzle; Goose in the Pond and Dove in the Window. Discuss this author's work below.

I have really enjoyed this author. I too am waiting to read Dove In the Window, but our library doesn't have it in yet. I have read the other four mentioned. They are extremely easy reads and the language is mild which is a rarity these days. Her characters are interesting and she has already dealt with some issues concerning them that were surprising. I suggest you read her first book first...after that I don't think the order is extremely important...unless you are like me - I prefer reading books in the order they are written!

I love Ms. Fowler's books! Her books are so funny. I can't wait to read the new one.

Have just read her new book - what I like is how her protagonist deals with the changing relationships in her life - death of first husband - learning to live with 2nd husband, etc. well worth the read

This series relates to quilts. Every book has a quilt design as the main theme and name of the book. Dove in the Window is her new book I am waiting to read. I've read Goose in the Pond, Fool's Puzzle and Kansas Troubles. I missed Irish Chain. Anyone else like this series? I like her characters. Fun reading.

Ironically, I've just discovered Earlene Fowler, like I have this web site (a little slow off the mark)!

By pure fluke, I randomly pulled "Irish Chain" off the bookshelf this past week and I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Not many books make it to my personal full 5 star rating, but this one did. Needless to say, I'm going to be pulling a whole lot more of this series off the shelf now!

"It's a cult... they worship blue oysters"... MST3K 'The Final Sacrifice'

is it just me, or does ortiz almost border being abusive? he has to know where benni is all the time, he tries to control who she can see, and it's all his way or the highway. this is the classic beginnings of an abusive relationship. i loved it when she kicked his butt out! the books are well written mysteries otherwise.

Finally, someone else who enjoys Fowler's books. I don't see Ortiz as abusive, but his "only I can protect you" attitude would get old to me. However, Fowler balances his concern with Benni's sometimes too easy-going "I'll be okay" attitude, which makes for great reading! She is my favorite author, and I am always sad to finish each new book, because I will have to wait so long for another one.
