Did Hitchcock write a short story entitled “the house that cost too much"? If so does anyone know where I can get a copy of it?

"The Door Was Wide O..."

I am searching for a story from a Hitchcock paperback, circa 1968 or '69. The story involves a young girl who is babysitting and, after reassuring herself that she's safe in the house and she is worrying unrealistically, she enters a room (the kitchen perhaps?) to find the back door open. The story is particularly memorable for the last line, that went something like "The door was wide o..." If you have read this, know the book in which it was published, or even recall the author, I would truly appreciate your help. Thanks! - Hillary

Hello All,

I'm trying to track down a Hitchcock Collection I read long ago. I'll provide what clues I can and, with luck, perhaps you can provide the rest.

The introduction featured Hitch acting as a (American) football coach. The part that really sticks out in my mind is the final line of the introduction, which reads: "So let's get out there and kill 'em."

The cover featured skeletons dressed as (American-style) football players. As best I can recall, it was a Dell paperback. I'd even go so far as to say the books title is "Skeleton Crew," but none of the book covers online seems to match my recollection.

I know it's not much to go on, but can anyone help? [wrings hands]

Hello All, I am trying to track down a short story by Hitchcock. I don't know the title, but it is about a married couple living somewhere in the country. The husband is an abusive and belligerent person who belittles his wife and beats their dog. In the climactic scene, the husband goes to the dog's pen with the intention of inflicting another (perhaps fatal?) beating on the dog, but is instead attacked by the dog and dies. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hey guys, I've been looking for a long time for one of Alfred Hitchcock's short stories, which I read when I was a youngster, and I was amazed by it but of course I can't recall the name. The story is about a guy who visits another guy and tells him everything about a society of people (which he himself belongs to) who put together their efforts and all together hate one person till this person dies as a result of all the hating. Ring any bell? I would be very thankful if anybody would care to mail me at hugo@sunking.no, thank you so much!

You can check out anytime you like...but you can never leave!

Fast Fierce and Funny, there is a collection titled Skeleton Crew (formerly titled More Stories For Late At Night) but the cover shows skeleton pirates.

Actually, I *just* finished reading that anthology last week! Same cover, etc., too. Sadly, that wasn't the one I'd been looking for. Nevertheless, it _was_ a cracking good read. [gives "thumbs up" of approval]

Thanks for the post all the same, though! [beams]

I have "16 Skeletons From My Closet" around here somewhere, and I'm hoping that that's the one I'm looking for. I'm afraid this "mystery" is going to drive me right 'round the bend. [fidgets]

Cheers,

FFF

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a short story published in one of Alfred's books. It's about a guy who digs up a well in his backyard I think, and soon realizes that there are strange living beings underneath, kind of like little monsters. So he starts to feed them I think, or send them stuff from above earth, and I won't tell you the climax because as I remember it was just too good! I just can't remember the name of this story. I read it once, loved it, and then lost the book. Does this story ring a bell to anybody?
