I didn't even know this was up at Mystery Net - so my apologies for not replying earlier.

In some ways, Square in the Face was inspired by the story of a real child from Medford, adopted, whose family searched for his biological siblings when he had leukemia and needed a bone marrow match. Unfortunately, they did not succeed. I still keep pictures of this smiling, bald child in his Osh-Gosh overalls right over my desk.
