The Shaman's Game is the fourth in the legend-infused chronicle set in the hills and canyons of Colorado, where native
Charlie Moon is a policeman on the Ute reservation near the village of Ignacio. Other titles include The Shaman Sings, The Shaman Laughs, and The Shaman's Bones. Look for the September, 1999 release of The Night Visitor.
James D. Doss works at the University of California's Los Alamos National Laboratory. Born and
brought up in Kentucky, Doss now lives in Taos, New Mexico.

The Shaman books are excellent stories with fine plotting and characters. The only similarity to Hillerman's books (which I also enjoy) are in the study of the American Indian culture and religion.
Another fine author in this line is
Margaret Coel.
I have only read a couple of Doss's books but I like the way that Moon tries to convince himself that he doesn't believe in any of that mystical nonsense but then goes and acts on it anyway.

I confess...started using wrinkle cream and dyed my hair...now my face is darker and my hair is wrinkled...whassup with that?
I have found these books excellent reading, and enjoy the character's interactions - especially Aunt Daisy's with anyone.
I just finished 'White Shell Woman' by James d. Doss. It was the first of his books I have read, and I enjoyed it. I liked a lot of the ominous hints early in the book, as they were all explained later. However, at the very end of the book, his companion 'whispers thirteen words' before ridding Moon of his troublesome apparition. Theses thirteen whispered words are never mentioned again. What WERE they?!
Sorry, I put in the wrong e-mail address. The real one is micandconor@yahoo.com
I have read, and loved all of James D. Doss's books. He has a very clever sence of humor and is a excellent writer. I have also read all of Tony Hillermans books, but I find so much more pleasure in Doss's work. I just hopes he comes out with another terrific book soon.
I have read most of James Doss' books having recently finished "Grandmother Spider." I'm now reading "White Shell Woman." I'm wondering why Sarah Frank (the child staying with Aunt Daisy) isn't mentioned in White Shell Woman. Did I miss a book somewhere in the lineup explaining why she has disappeared or what? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
just started "White Shell Woman" after reading two previous novels. Noticed one big mistake, Navajo elders (male or female) especially even remotely traditional, never wear their hair in braids. Big boo-boo. I personally know several families on the Big Rez and this has 'put me off' on Mr. Doss' works. Should have been the traditional bun tied with wool yarn.
I love James Doss books. I especially love the humour in them. I think he is a far superior write to Hillerman. I live with a Navajo and it has now become a standing joke when I kill a spider to say, "A Navajo killed you. I think Doss is genius!!!
Auntie Linda Robbins Navajos do wear their hair in braids but it is not common. Don't let this put you off of his books...his books are wonderful. The Navajo man I live with wears his hair in a braid. There are no set rules. You will find Urban Indians do not always stick with what is known. As any Navajo and they will tell you they are "cultural borrowers".

Thanks for providing that information, Janette.
Just read my first James Doss book - Three
Sisters - and plan to read more. Great
characters (my personal requirement of an
author) and interesting set ups. I'm curious
about where, exactly, in western KY Mr. Doss
grew up. I'm from Hopkinsville and am
curious to find out. Anybody out there know
for sure?

Everything I've seen just says Kentucky, no specifics.
