Just Because

'And I have the sense to recognize that I don't know how to let you go.'

Just because....

To talk to others about nothing at all, and so we don't take up the teasers time and space. As some of you know, I enjoy talking about nothing and annoying people. If you also like to do that, this is just the place. Anything goes here, but remember, it's all in good fun and not meant to hurt others.

Sassi - my dad didn't even teach me the importance of making sure the car has plenty of oil, much less any other car care tips. Needless to say, my first car suffered a painful death when I allowed it to run out of oil and the engine seized. I do agree that women should know the basics for caring for and maintaining a car. And as for my bf not complaining, his family has him well trained. He works on their cars far more than he does mine.

We know people that can do the harder repairs, so rarely do we have to take a car to the shop for anything other than an oil change. I choose not to repair things myself, but I could change the oil and stuff.

My father is a mechanic and he taught me the basics so "his daughter" wouldn't have to flag down strangers for help.

My brother is a panel beater/spray painter and I married a mechanic/boilermaker so I'm pretty well covered.

I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Jersey, I laughed at your comment on how your b/f's family has him trained. My best friend's husband is a mechanic. He works on everyone's cars but.....his own. She has to practically threaten his life and limb to get him to pull the van into the garage and deal with the repairs. Keeps shoving it aside for the "paying customers" like me. **g**

As for not learning, my friend's dad freaked when we were in high school and I told my friend that her rad was dry - to go get water while it cooled down. He said no female would even know what a rad was and it wasn't empty - marched over from his house to where we were on the roadside, saw it was empty. He refused to eat his words, still mumbled how girls shouldn't know these things. After, I showed my friend how to check oil and such. Was glad he wasn't my dad!

Kirsten, yup, that's the best way - to know those who can do the repairs. Our local mechanic aka: family friend did all our repairs - at a cheaper cost as we'd do all the orders for the parts and even helped out. But he moved. I found a local shop that just opened and they are terrific. We also do all the minor stuff out at the farm, like the oil changes and such. My brother lines everyone up and away he goes - works well. **g**

Lucky, sounds like you are covered. :)

To be honest, I don't know if his family has to pester him into working on their cars or they just announce that he needs to work on it. I do know that it takes me a couple weeks to get him to work on my car and that's after daily questioning, "When will you going to change my oil/replace that bulb/order my new exhaust?"

Sassi - I think I'm going to sign off soon. My computer is getting slower and slower. It's driving me nuts.

Procrastination is a virus

Gosh. What a discussion! I've tried bf's and other non professional, well-meaning mechanics and it seems I eventually have to slink back to my regular. My car is fixed! It puts out heat, they flushed the system and changed all bulbs in good time. I've been going to these honest mechanics for 30 yrs (sometimes in disguise and in the dead of night)and they are great. Even if their shop is full, I get in pretty close to the front. They're good ol' home boys who I know for a fact never treat a woman or man wrong, and have the much envied position of absolute professionals in all they do. Too bad they're all really, really married.
