THE CASE OF THE ROUND RED OAK APPLE

by Anthony Durrant

Jimmy Johnson looked up at the oak apples high up in the oak tree.

"I was settin' right yere, Sheriff," he told him, "under this great big oak tree. When I saw the apples on it was ripe, I plucked one and ate it raw - stem, skin flesh, an' all."

"Martin Henstridge was murdered at about two o'clock this afternoon," said Sheriff Wiggins, "stabbed with a penknife through the chest. Are you sure you weren't in the area when he was murdered?"

"Positive!" said Johnson. "Ah was right here, sheriff, all the time! Ah swear! After I finished eating the apple, I climbed onto mah tractor and plowed the cornfield from west to east!"

"Indeed!" said Lucrezia Archipelago, who was visiting America while on a vacation she had won in a raffle contest.

She jumped up and grabbed a branch of the oak tree, then broke off an oak apple and dropped down to the ground. When she broke it open and showed it to Jimmy Johnson, his face went white as he realized that the object in the middle of the oak apple had swept away his alibi,

WHAT WAS THE OBJECT? CAN YOU GUESS?
