THE CASE OF THE SCARED OLD LADY

THE CASE OF THE SCARED OLD LADY

by Anthony Durrant

"Gosh, was I scared!" the old lady told Lucrezia Archipelagos.

"What happened?" asked Lucrezia. "Can you tell me?"

"Yeah," she said, "yeah, I guess I can. My name is Bernice Shellgame and I live across the hall from a man named Casper Jenkins. I was coming out from my apartment when I saw Casper following me down the hall. I headed to the elevator, not thinking anything of it. But then he followed me into the elevator and got inside with me. We rode down to the basement garage together - that's where I keep my car - and when I got out of the elevator, he attacked me, wrapping his left arm around my neck. He used his other hand to point a knife at my throat and ordered me to hand over all my things - my money, my wallet, everything - which I did. I struggled to get away from him, but he throttled me until I passed out - though not before I managed to shout out, 'HELP!'

"When I awoke, I found myself lying here on the garage floor - and found that my car, my purse, my wallet and my money was all gone!"

"Can you describe him?" Lucrezia asked.

"Of course I can, honey!" Mrs. Shellgame said. "He's tall, blonde, and very muscular, with light blue eyes. Gosh, lady, you've got to be at least twice Casper's size - you're so BIG!"

"My name is not 'lady!'" Lucrezia said. "It is Lucrezia Borgia Archipelago - and I was coming here to see my son and daughter-in-law at their new apartment at this building. You, however, are a different story, Mrs. Shellgame. You have made one mistake that has convinced me you are lying."

WHAT MISTAKE?
