THE CASE OF THE DIGITAL WRISTWATCH

(C) 2004 by Anthony Durrant

"You say somebody broke into your office and made off with a set of

plans?" Lucrezia asked Stuart Bromley, the scientist.

"That's right!" said Bromley. "The plans were in a safe by my

desk. At about eight o'clock last night, I took the plans out of the

safe to copy them. Suddenly, I heard a noise and went to investigate.

A man entered the office from a window down the hall. As he came into

the office, I hid under the desk and watched in horror as the man took

the plans, then leaped out the office window."

"What time was that?" asked Lucrezia. "Was it in the evening?"

"It was precisely 11:00 at night!" Bromley said. "As the man

left, I looked at my wristwatch and I noted the time."

Lucrezia looked at Bromley's wristwatch. It was a Timex Quartz

Triathlon with a liquid crystal screen. The time on the watch was

3:27.10 and moving forward by seconds. She smiled sadly.

"Can you describe the man?" she asked.

"Yes!" Bromley told her. "He was a tall man with a tuxedo on.

Around his neck was a red bow tie. I made out a slender but handsome

face. The man had short, dark hair and blue-green eyes that made him

look very eerie."

"Well, Bromley," Lucrezia said with a smile, "as part of your story's

untrue, you can't expect me to believe any of it!"

WHY NOT?
