H(enry) R(eymond) F(itzwalter) Keating hails from Britain and is a renowned mystery writer, journalist, and critic. His mysteries feature Inspector Ganesh Ghote (pronounced GO-tay), a humble East Bombay police inspector whose cases have taken him into some wide-ranging and bizarre situations, from Victorian England to a house filled with Buddhist students. Keating's mysteries demonstrate his well-paced plots and excellent dialogue, as well as his never-fail sense of humor. Along with writing mysteries, Keating is also a critic and scholar of the genre. I love the simple, humble Inspector Ghote, riding around on his bicycle. He isn't tough or rich or heavy-drinking. He sometimes makes embarrassing mistakes. He is sometimes intimidated. His resources are very limited. All of that makes him more endearing. Also the books present an experience with India and its common society that I would not otherwise have.

"Semantics? - You dont know the meaning of the word!"

I have read that Keating never visited India in all the time he was writing Ghote books. Does anyone know if this is true? I believe HR is still alive and working - perhaps he could reply?

I love Ghote - one of my favorite stories is the "The all-bad hat"
