Does anyone know if it is legal to use real place names in a novel, such as a bar or restaurant? I know street names and areas are ok, but i'm not sure on this count.

There shouldn't be a problem unless you involve the place itself in something that could be taken to be libellous or defamatory or damaging to the reputation of the business.
