Are you a fan of Sherlock Holmes? Have you ever wondered how Holmes, Watson, Moriarty and the staple characters of these gripping stories came to meet each other? How they started their fascinating relationships? Well, trust me on this, just find a comfy place, set aside some time to read this book by this gifted author and let yourself be taken on a thrilling journey through the beginnings of it all.

I began reading with a certain skepticism, being a true Sherlockian I am leery of any writer trying to compete with the Classic Doyle tales, but within the first couple of chapters I was hooked. I am now eager to read the other works by David Stuart Davies now that I have experienced his unique talent for taking a much loved, well know character from such a gifted writer as Conan Doyle and completely proving that he, Davies, is definitely up for the challenge!

This is the very beginning of the tales of Dr Watson as he meets, rooms with, studies and writes of the very first case in his journals of Holmes, telling of the burgeoning genius of the most famous literary detective of all time. The reader is treated to a sort of scavenger hunt as each and every quirk, ability, skill and each major character in the stories are introduced with such cleverness as Davies slyly weaves these revelations into the plot and we find ourselves eagerly alert for the next bit of those Aha! Moments when we come across those subtle details.

I will not spoil the read for you so I will “stifle myself” and try not to burst forth with my excitement to share all the goodies Davies has given us … like for instance, did you know Watson had a deep dark secret? That Moriarty played a major part in making Holmes who he became and did you know that their landlady Mrs. Hudson … oh I just can’t stay quiet about this book. It is a true page turner, an exhilarating roller coaster ride of suspense, appalling crimes, hidden clues, with more twists and turns than a dark foreboding maze … come!! Join the chase … after all the game is afoot!

About the author: David Stuart Davies is one of Britain's leading Sherlockian writers. He was the Editor of "Sherlock Holmes: The Detective Magazine" and has written many Holmes novels.
