Ace Atkins. Remember the name. A few years hence, people are going to be claiming that they were hip to this guy early on. Most will be lying, but many will be telling the truth. (His debut novel, Crossroad Blues, just went into its 4th hardcover printing in as many months.)

Ace is young (27), smart, and as hip as they come. Good looking cat, too. Crossroad Blues sets music historian Nick Travers on the trail of a missing colleague and the circumstances of the death of real-life figure Robert Johnson, arguably the greatest blues guitarist ever. Stir in a couple Big Easy heavies and Jesse Garon, a 19-year-old hitman wannabe and Elvis channeler, and you've got quite a gumbo, indeed.

This is the first of a blues trilogy, but I got a feeling that Nick Travers is one of those characters who is going to outlast three books. Nick's got legs, and so does his creator. Post comments here.
