The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Ectoplasmic Man

Daniel Stashower

Titan Books October 2009
US $9.95 / CAN $12.95

According to the venerable Dr. Watson, chronicler of the adventures of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, a genius whose skills are nearly immeasurable, and Harry Houdini met in what was an explosion of egos, intellect and craftiness, in April of 1910 as the world was slowly moving toward the Great War. Why have we not heard of this historic meeting of these two brilliant men before? Dr Watson explains that he promised Houdini not to write of this matter as long as he was still alive, in keeping with the Magician‘s intense obsession with his privacy.

This book is so well written that one finds it easy to blur that line between fiction and fact. Once the writer draws you into the story, and trust me he will, you find yourself so enthralled and caught up in the adventure that nothing matters but turning that next page ... and the next! The story grabs you as soon as these two fiercely dominant men meet. The reader is quickly swept up in crime, magic, espionage, attacks on the throne, scandals in the royal families of several major countries, traps, escapes and of course murder. We are told the story of how Houdini is charged with horrendous crimes, his beloved wife Bess pleads to Holmes to prove her husband innocent. We are treated to a rare look behind the mystery of Harry Houdini as Watson describes this infamous Magician who seems to be able to do the impossible, even walk through walls, we see Houdini the Ectoplasm Man.

This thoroughly enjoyable book held an even greater surprise for me towards the end and it alone is worth the price of this thrilling book ... I am referring to a heart pounding, breath-taking, lengthy chase that rivals Bram Stoker's own pursuit of Dracula back to his castle. As soon as all three men are face to face with the criminal mastermind you must turn off the phone and lock your door and settle in for the ride of your life as you accompany them on this pulse racing adventure. I truly could not read fast enough. You will not be disappointed and I guarantee that you will become a devoted fan of Stashower's.
