I have never read any of Cannell's books before, but I was familiar with
the many TV shows he has been involved with. I really had no idea what
his regular writing style was. I should have tried out his stories
earlier.
The Pallbearers pulled me right in to the story. There was no playing
around for half the book setting up the characters. The mystery started
up within the first 20 pages.
The story is about the suicide of Walter "Pop" Dix who ran an
orphanage. He was the only father figure for many troubled kids. When
he died, six kids who had now grown were called to be pallbearers at his
funeral. Why them? They all had different jobs and were from different
eras at the home, but they all shared a common trait. All felt they
owed a debt to Walter for not giving up on them. The group came
together to figure out why he would give up his own life.
The story is fast paced and hard to put down. There are plenty of
twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end. I highly recommend
this book.
