I'm a manic depressive.. I discovered Hannibal Lector when I wandered into a movie theatre while in the midst of a depressive state.. I found myself fascitnated by Silence of the Lambs.. I found the book and devoured Thomas Harris's most excellent writing with relish.. Discovered there was a book preceding Silence of the Lambs and found that The Red Dragon and devoured it as well.. Both of them were tasty to an extreme.. The movie based on The Red Dragon was really bad.. I have waited eagerly for the next helping of Hannibal Lector served by Thomas Harris.. I have not read it yet.. I have been reading mixed reviews.. I have read that a movie based upon this sequel will most likely not be made or at least with Anthony Hopkins and Jody Foster.. It would be a mistake to make the movie without them..

I hope Hannibal will stand up to my expectations.. If not I may have to devour............

Hannibal disappointed me. I much preferred Silence Of The Lambs. Especially the ending, which chilled me no end. Not many books can actually scare me...no, not even Stephen King's! Hannibal was okay I guess, the book was quite well written but not as good as the previous mentioned book. Thanks for listening!...Bye...

One note on "Hannibal" - Even though it is billed as a sequal to SotL (the book) it is (at least partly) a sequel to the Movie in that the some of the back history is from the movie continuity not that of the book. For example, there is a mention of the Head of the Mental Hospital having vanished on a vacation trip(which was the end of the movie) while the book only has him in under Police (FBI?) protection.

I enjoyed the book when I read it and I plan to go back and reread SotL to see how it dovetails with the new book.

Did anyone except me find the movie Hannibal very unlike the original Silence of the Lambs and one before Manhunter.

Perhaps the story should not have been centered around Hannibal, since he is really very unsavory and totally unlikeable.

Perhaps it was just me -- and I normally am fascinated with Ridley Scott's movie making techniques. Just didn't care for this movie at all. Would like to hear from you on this.

Read recently that "Red Dragon" is being remade starring Sir Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal. It was previously made, entitled "Manhunter," [Dir. Michael Mann, 1986] starring William Petersen (CSI) as Will Graham, the profiler, Dennis Farina as Jack Crawford and Tom Noonan as Francis Dollarhyde. I thought it was an above-average and overlooked film.

In some ways this film was scarier than "Silence of the Lambs," because the character of the Tooth Fairy was superbly and understatedly played by Tom Noonan and William Petersen was excellent as the profiler drug kicking and screening back to stare into the abyss. Check is out.

Famous fictional characters have a life of their own, if you know what I mean.

I have read all the books with Hannibal Lecter in them including the newish one Hannibal Rising. I have also seen all the movies except Manhunter. They are really good.
