I'm surprised that Boston has not appeared among favorite locations since Parker's books are so popular. I wonder if people favor locations they are familiar with or prefer to read about places they've never visited but would like to--
I'm going to guess that with Parker's books you mean the books about Spencer? For myself I have to admit to not having read a single book about Spencer. Just because we had Spenser as a TV show and I'm wary of reading the books after having already been presented with an idea of how the characters look and so on.
And I can't say that I've personally ever have chosen a mystery book because of where it's set geographically. I have bought some books written by Swedish authors for some of my foreign friends just for fun, to give them a taste of Sweden.
Kat - and people still want to go to Sweden, even after reading the books!! :o)
Drat - foiled again!! ;-)
The stopyourekillingme site lists the following detectives as being based in Boston -
Carlotta Carlyle (Linda Barnes)
Brady Coyne (William G. Tapply)
John Francis Cuddy (Jeremiah Healy)
Francis X. Flynn (Gregory MCDonald)
Angela Gennaro & Patrick Kenzie (Dennis Lehane)
Jerry Kennedy (George V. Higgins)
Sunny Randall (Robert B. Parker)
Spenser (Robert B. Parker)
Michael Spraggue III (Linda Barnes)
I very often chose books because of location or main character's profession
Boston, Las Vegas, New Orleans etc.
