The shorter ones do seem "formula-based". Others have commented on how the authors seem to be repeating themselves.

Didn't one book say that Carson was a former prosecuter, or had worked for the District Attorney?

While looking up something else, I found that is says on the first page of The Secret Of The Old Clock (1930) that he WAS "a former district attorney".
