The Westing Game

My 5th grade class will be reading The Westing Game. I was wondering if anyone has any lesson plans or ideas to share. This will be my first time using this book. Thanks!

you could read it out loud to them for a little break somewhere in the day. That is what my fifth grade teacher does.

My upper elementary children loved The Westing Game (10 years ago). I posted a bulletin board with pictures and captions from "America the Beautiful" which as you know figures in the plot.

In terms of incorporation into a curriculum for fith graders I can think of little better than to use the book as a launchpad for all of the subjects for a very short while (after all this book is not really that challenging for fifth graders)One can discuss immigration and the United States as so many of the characters are immigrants. You can teach about the stock market to latch onto Turtle's big kick, and onothology or a discussion of birth defects as related to Chris might fill out a science portion.

I use Westing Game in my 6th grade genre study of mysteries. It is a light-hearted break to the darker books we read. Students do things like create a sales brochure for Sunset Towers, turn the story into a board game or card game, dramatize a talk show where some of the characters are interviewed (Oprah/Jerry style). Check out www.carolhurst.com for more lesson plans relating to myste
