Word Squares

Created by Stevie B

The idea in this puzzle is for the host to create a mini crossword in the shape of a square (size 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5) or a rectangle (size 3x4, 3x5, or 4x5), complete with clues for each word in the puzzle. The clues may be given in any order and may be straight or cryptic. It's not necessary to specify the size of the grid or the number of letters in each clue's solution (unless it's a two-word or hyphenated answer, in which case the word lengths should be provided in standard format. e.g. 2,2 or 2-3). Proper nouns and universally recognised acronyms are allowed.Use of blank squares is permitted. The host must make sure that all words are legitimate and clued. The first player to complete the solution (if the square is assembled but only lacks one word or letter, simply guessing that word/letter, with or without posting the completed square, constitutes solving.) wins the next turn.

Hosts, please number you clues, indicate the number of blanks, if any, and which of the following Word Square types is being used. Players, please indicate what clue you’re guessing at.

Type 1 - Words reading across and down are identical squares)

Example:
1. angle
2. instinctual self engages each brief thought
3. bishops' authorities
4. the drug Mark is after

Solution:
F I S H
I D E A
S E E S
H A S H

Type 2 - Words reading across and down are different (squares or rectangles)

Example:(2 blanks)
1. these eggs are kind of fishy
2. a unit of mass
3. reverential awe
4. a river or state
5. in another direction
6. spoil the Spanish sea
7. a notable talent

Solution:

All the usual P&S guidelines apply. These Tips and Resources can help you to create a new puzzle. If you have questions regarding hosting and posting, check out the FAQ. Have fun!
