For many years I have been a big fan of works written by one of my favorite team of authors; Preston and Child. The first book of theirs that I read was "Cabinet of Curiosities" which remains on my "re-read shelf". If you have read their works it is easy to see their styles writing separately is great but when they are together on a novel something "magical and mysterious" happens!

In this newest collaboration they bring us a new character "Gideon Crew" ... and wow is he impressive! It is clear from the beginning that this character is a fascinating and complicated man. At a young age he saw his brilliant patriotic father gunned down in a cover-up, then his Mother dies as he becomes a man and she charges him to get revenge for his Father's death and restore his reputation. Gideon, who has grown up under suspicions and scrutiny, has received a bizarre education and is himself brilliant and loyal, yet a master thief! After he seeks out and kills the men responsible he is approached by an organization that is led by a very powerful man who seems to have ties that wrap around the globe and he needs Gideon's uumm shall we call them .."special talents" to find a Chinese Scientist who has fled China with a Top Secret item and its plans ... plans that will prove to be the means for whatever country owns it to become THE world leader!

Just as Gideon takes this heart-pounding assignment on, he is told that an equally powerful organization has sent their own "Assassin" known to be a sadistic "killing machine" after Gideon, to kill everyone that Gideon shares the secret with and to retrieve the "plans and the revolutionary item". I have to add here that not since the angel of death in "Marathon Man" or Freddie Krueger have I heard of such a unique and terrifying weapon ... I guarantee that you have never seen a weapon like this written about before! This exciting book is well worth the read just to find out about the "Crane's favorite and bizarre killing weapon". If you enjoy Bond or Indiana Jones or just a good suspenseful story this will satisfy BUT this one is NOT your typical story by these two. I will advise you not to pick this book up expecting anything like an Agent Pendergast work. If you have not read the Pendergast series then I beg you to do so and get to see their best work! Gideon's Sword is a short, fun, curious story that is worth reading despite some of the 2 star reviews that have been posted. I felt it was better than that! ... it is not a great example of their best work but it is still very enjoyable.

About the Authors: These two writers have been collaborating for a very long time and are a favorite for fans of their quirky, mysterious and fascinating tales of investigations by my favorite character of theirs ... Agent Pendergast. They have written dozens of books together and also have had bestsellers separately as well.
